Dalmatie fig

Categories: ,

Description

The Dalmatie fig is a medium to large fruit characterized by its dark purple to nearly black skin. The flesh is sweet and rich, typically a creamy pink or amber color, offering a smooth texture that is highly prized for fresh eating and culinary uses.

Ripening:
Main crop ripens from end January

General Information:

  • Climate: Suitable  for USDA zones 7-10. It prefers areas with plenty of sunlight and protection from cold winds.
  • Soil: Dalmatie figs grow best in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. They can tolerate a range of soil types but prefer loamy or sandy soils.
  • Growth Habit: The tree can grow 10-15 feet tall and has a bushy, spreading form. Dalmatie figs typically produce two crops: a breba crop (from last year’s growth) in early summer and a main crop in late summer to fall.

Care Tips

  1. Watering:
    • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Water deeply encourages strong root development, but ensure that the soil drains well to prevent root rot. Use mulch to help retain moisture.
  2. Fertilizing:
    • Apply a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10) in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit production. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of fruit.
  3. Pest Control:
    • Monitor for common pests, such as fig beetles, aphids, and fruit flies. Use organic pest control methods, such as neem oil or insecticidal soap, to manage infestations. Keeping the area around the tree clean can help prevent pests.
  4. Mulching:
    • Apply a layer of organic mulch (like straw, wood chips, or leaves) around the base of the tree. This helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
  5. Harvesting:
    • Harvest figs when they are soft, drooping, and glossy. Gently twist and pull the figs from the branch to avoid damaging the tree or other fruits. It’s best to pick figs in the morning when the flavor is at its peak.
