Olympian fig

Categories: ,

Description

The Olympian fig is a medium to large fruit with dark purple skin and sweet, juicy amber-colored flesh. Its rich flavor makes it ideal for fresh consumption, baking, and preserves.

Ripening:
From mid January

General Information:

  • Climate It grows well in USDA zones 7-10 and prefers full sun exposure.
  • Soil: Olympian figs prefer well-drained, fertile soils with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. They can adapt to various soil types but need good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Growth Habit: The tree can reach heights of 10-15 feet and typically has a bushy, spreading growth habit. It produces a main crop in late summer and may yield a smaller breba crop earlier in the season.

Care Tips

  1. Watering:
    • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Deep watering encourages strong root growth, but avoid waterlogging.
  2. Fertilizing:
    • Apply a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10) in early spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can lead to excessive foliage growth.
  3. Pest Control:
    • Inspect for common pests like fig beetles and aphids. Use organic solutions, such as neem oil or insecticidal soap, to manage infestations. Maintaining a clean garden area can help minimize pests.
  4. Mulching:
    • Apply organic mulch (straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves) around the base of the tree to retain moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.
  5. Harvesting:
    • Harvest figs when soft, drooping, and glossy. Gently twist and pull to avoid damaging the tree. Morning is the best time for picking to ensure maximum flavor.
